my thoughts since we've already gone through that phase.

We have two kids, and 8 years ago one was doing dog shows, so we needed a lot of room. We went from a Volvo wagon (aka The Money Pit) to an Explorer because we didn't like the vans we looked at.

What we'd do today for the same needs is a cross-over, like the Mazda CX 9 or the Ford Edge. Justin's friends are right that more height is nice when hauling kids. It's useful, especially when they're teensy, to be able to go into the back seat easily. And it is easier to get them in and out of car seats with more height. Vans and cross-overs are good for this.

BUT that is also a very short-term requirement. Once the kid is toddling they are usually pretty good at getting in and out of their seats themselves, so all you or your bride have to do is strap them in. You'll have the beast you buy for a few years, but kids are only really tiny for 12 months or so. Keep that in mind as you shop.

My town is awash in minivans and SUVs, but I'm seeing more and more moms driving around in cross-overs or in wagons from Audi, Saab, BMW, VW, Suby, and Volvo. They aren't as roomy as a van or SUV, but most people throw a Thule box on the roof for trips/vacations. Very practical!

I can see where a 9-3 SC would be too small for you, but what about a 9-5 SportWagon? That's what we have now and I have to say it holds almost as much as the Explorer. 23 mpg local and 32 highway beats any van out there, plus it's safe and fun to drive.

Some vans are semi-safe, but none are fun to drive. Having made the SUV mistake, I can tell you this: Life's too short to drive boring cars. Get a nice Euro wagon
