The -2005 Passat is based on the B5 platform, which is shared with the A4. It's stretched a few inches in a couple directions to produce a bigger-than-an-A4 car, but it's still smaller than an A6 which is (and always has been) based on the VAG "C" platform.
Unlike those wackos over at BMW and their platforms, VAG's make simple sense. Small cars are the "A" platform, mid-sized cars the "B" platform, full-size cars the "C" platform, and large cars on the "D" platform. Things get somewhat confusing when you have an A4 on a B5 platform or an (Audi) A3 on an (VAG) A4 platform, but mostly it makes good clean German sense. Ironically, there never was an A4 on an A4 platform. :)
A BMW 540i wagon with a 6-speed is a dream car of mine... will the lady drive a stick? :)
