With the GT28RS a proper HW the 9-3 will move like a 343hp BMW E46 M3. This is not though, but based on experimental testing from the road.
Cars will move equally from 100-250km/h, how ever due to the wider power band of the saab it will beat the M3 in strait line if acceleration is started from lover revs, where the N/A M3 does not work to it best. The lag near 100km/h in third is mimimal with the gt28rs, ie the bmw will only gain ~1m at the start when pedals are pressed to the metal at the same time.

There is not reason to believe that the "real" <350bhp obtained with the GT28RS would make the car perfrom much better than its arrivals, like the M3 or the new S4. If this level of performance is set a a higher level the GT28RS is no longer a choice, you need to choose something bigger.

The GT3071R with internal WG does not support bhp over 400, with some porting one can gain ~20bhp or so.

The GT2871R on the other hand lies in the middle of these to, having the turbine from the GT28RS and the compressor from the GT3071R.

I dont have a dyno graph yet for a saab 2.3 with GT3071 (maybe somebody has?), but here is one comparsion between two 2.3 9K's, which will give some idea. One is fedded with GT28RS and the other one has the GT30BB.

From the curve you will see that the GT28RS is much stronger up to 3700rpm. At 4000rpm lines cross and GT28RS can longer supply the needed airflow required to keep the torque up at this level and it will start to fall. The GT28RS curve goes only up to 4500 because there where some issue with fueling at the time the dyno run was made.

I would assume that the a 2.3 equipped with GT3071 will fall somewhere in between those curves, but it is hard say how much earlier the torque curve will catch up with the GT28RS curve.

Lag is a another issue, which naturally will increse with the size of the turbo.

Personally I fell that the selection of the turbo should also be made based on the your driving habits and the use of a car. We all know that even with the stock turbo one can achieve more torque than the front wheels can handle on first and second gear, so all power/torque that is above this level can only be "used" in higher gears. Ask you self do you have use for this and where am I planning on using this power? Do you race at tracks, run 1/4 miles or race on the streets at night?

In the end the guestion is more or less up to the following three things
small engine, high power, lag (power band).
You can choose two, sorry one since the size of the engine is pretty much fixed ;)

Of course the internet is full with all kinds of succes stories about high power cars, which spool lower and faster than they did stock and which will put down numbers on the rollers that make young boys see wet day dreams if put to the task, but is this reality? I have yeat run across a 2.0-2.3 turbo saab that would fulfill these issues and I dont think I will ever find one either...
