I contacted my good friend scientist, he explained how it works and did some math, the absolute pressure is 14.7psi at sea-level and 11.99 in Denver/Boulder area... This is an easy way to think about it... Take a ballon, fill it with air, the percentage of oxygen is 21%. You take that ballon from sea-level up to Boulder, the ballon expands, it gets bigger, the gasses expand, now you still have 21% oxygen, but the volume of air is 20% larger, so you have to move 20% more air to get the same amount of oxygen through the motor as you would at sea-level. The 20% is almost exact for Denver/Boulder, so that is why they say the air is thinner, the air is expanded and although the percentage of oxygen remains constant throughout the atmosphere, you have less dense air by volume and in Denver you have less dense air by around 20%. I will have to flow 20% more air to get back to the same amount of oxygen that would flow at sea-level. I hope that clears it up some.... Thin air indeed.... :-)
