Unintentional smokescreen from 90 SPG / LH 2.4

Hey gang. Question for the room. Car in question is 90 SPG, great shape, largely stock, slightly tweaked latest style red box + 3.0FPR. TE05 Mitsu turbo. Car boosts 1/2 into red, pegs just slightly below that. Faster than my 89 SPG but not as quick as my old 85 SPG (RIP).
Here's what's happening. My 1st LH 2.4 car FYI. Every so often when really getting on it, in 2nd gear, at high revs/high boost for this car (say just over 1/2 into red on boost, above 5K rpm), I look back in mirror to see a pretty big cloud of dark colored blackish smoke. Lasts only a second but its enough to be really noticeable/embarassing. It's not minor in other words. I can replicate the problem over and over if I wanted to... but I can only replicate in 2nd gear. Haven't seen it in 3rd-5th at similar boost levels, similar RPMs (I tried). It kind of makes no sense to me. I know what overboost cutoff feels like in LH 2.2 (slam!)
I don't think I'm bouncing off rev limiter (after all I do this all the time and never see smoke, but in 2nd the revs climb quickly).
Could I be hitting the LH 2.4 ECU overboost cutoff (which I think is an injector cycle on these 2.4 cars). I know what it feels like on the LH 2.2 car (wham!). Also my other SPGs have done the puff of smoke every so often (onramps when stomping on it, etc), so I'm not overly concerned but this is way more severe (albeit brief).
Any ideas as to whats up? LH 2.4 overboost? Turbo seals shot?
Overall car runs like a top - no other symptoms of anything amiss other than a bit of oil consumption.
