i had an 83 900T 8 v that i was going to restore but didnt. however some of the components made it into an SPG block i rebuilt. so i know the major differences having learned the hard way:
8valve block - needs one hole drilled to anchor one of the 16v timing chain guides. 8valve crank wont migrate to 16 v - the woodruff key that turns the pulley is located too shallow due to a deeper timing chain housing on the 16v engine. I believe the turbo oil feed line originates in a different place but ends up at the turbo so a line swap is all that's needed (not 100% sure on that one). otherwise i beleive the blocks are identical. Oh, starter was moved on the 16v too.
Saab used lower compression pistons from the 8 valve engine with a special head that had lower CC volume to compensate for those pistons. that head has symmetrical intake ports which apparently allows for more porting as compared to the 86+ heads which went asymmetrical to promote swirl in the chamber. camshafts differ as well - the early intake cam was split lobe with 3 degrees less lift, and the exhaust cam had longer duration which makes it a bit better than later cams. an engine building buddy of mine said cams dont make a hell of a difference on a turbo engine - boost is king, but i got the preferred cams for my latest project, a 2.1L head/intake project. we'll see if they make a hill of beans or not.
those Pearlescent cars are incredible!
