Yes - I think a 1/2 spacer at the head side for sure (to push it all forwards) and another 1/2" spacer at the turbo side (to drop turbo down) as backup would be the way forward.
Downside is more gaskets and potential for leaks and needing to source longer studs.
I am leaning towards the standard size housing (non-compact) but with the 2.75" inlet.
The compressor wheel is 2.75" so it has to taper down to that regardless. I'd say the improvements by using 4" intake would be very marginal indeed and fitting is more of a fiddle.
