Basically whatyou're referring to is the turbo's exhaust housing inlet where it is fed by the exhaust manifold. Anyway yes a smaller turbine housing will spool up faster but anything smaller that your TE05 housing spec would sacrifice too much top end and even mid range power. The reason the 9-5 has less spool-up time is that it has a small turbo with a larger
displacement engine and a state of the art engine management system plus
the 12mm longer stroke helps as well. The A.I.D. we designed several
years ago (with Brad's help!) with the more resent improvement I've been
making does help a lot but our mechanical methods in these areas of
tuning are no match for the modern day electronic control systems. Even
an MSD BTM can't compete with the late Saab control systems because the
BTM just keeps on retarding with no end limit unless you install an
adjustable ball bleed valve so there's an actual end point. Then there's
the fall on it's face problem when you get up to around 4,000 RPM where
the advance needs to be brought back in so one of Brad's mechanical
advance conversions becomes necessary. The reality to all of this is
that going to a stand alone system for our early cars that not only
controls fuel but also ignition is the real answer for better spool-up
in addition to a proper turbo! Dave
