those things (and your car) were designed by people with masters and more likely doctorate degrees! You can't possibly expect someone like that to answer your question on a forum. The air you blow through a straw and cardboard tube are essentially the same temperature coming from your body. Since a car's engine is moving air by weight (not volume), at least that's what the calculations are based on. If an engine is moving one pound of air per second (I'm really making this number up to illustrate a point), that one pound of air has now expanded to many times it's original size after combustion, but the engine is still moving one pound per sec. Adding fuel (increases temperature, thus the volume of the air) and increasing the rate of work (increasing the RPMs increases the rate, more pounds per second) really adds up to an enormous volume of "air" (gas) coming out of the exaust. The reason why a turbo works is based on this heat principle (ex: one cubic ft. is now 10 cubic ft. moving at the same rate through the same orifice via the turbine wheel). That one pound is now magnitudes larger but is still moving by weight (pounds per second) at a certain rate. Reducing the size of the port to the turbine wheel will only restrict these expanding gases, especially if the convergence is altered. A 3" downpipe actually alters/improves the divergence from the turbo, another important aspect. Since the angle of divergence is small, the dp acts more like an expansion chamber, which of course allows the gases to escape faster from the turbo (read: quicker turbo spool-up). Well, I really have to go... HTH
