I can remember a few years ago going up to Vermont, in my previous Saab 900s, during this horrific storm. I think there was about a foot of snow on the ground and hard core snow in the air. (It was so bad the plows could not keep up and eventually the highway had to be closed.) On the way up I think I passed around 13 or 14 cars off the road. guess what, most of them were SUVs. there is nothing worse than some putz and his new SUV in the snow. too many people think they can drive in the snow just because they have 4WD. I remember getting the strangest looks after passing SUVs either stuck in the snow or of the road. The Saab just kept on truckin.' So in the snow, I guess they are real safe in the fact that they can hold the road a bit better than the rest.
