Safety is always relative, and size is one of the most important variables. All other things being equal (which they never are, of course), you will be safer in a very large, heavy vehicle (eg, Suburban) than a very small, light car (eg Geo).

A very valuable suggestion, from the fellow (Muir?) who wrote "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive and Running," is as follows: DRIVE LIKE YOU ARE AN AZTEC SACRIFICE STRAPPED TO THE FRONT BUMPER. This will do wonders to keep you focused on limiting your risks to relatively small disasters. Your mother will thank you.

The classic Saab 900 is a smallish car with better than average safety. But you are at greater risk in it than in a Suburban if hit by a massive vehicle. (Similarly, you probably are at greater risk in the Suburban than an M-1 tank, but try getting plates for the sucker.) If properly equipped, properly maintained and driven with skill and focus, you have a much better than average chance of avoiding disaster, and a much better than average chance of walking away should disaster befall you, but you must be capable of and prepared to control the vehicle at its limits to maximize on this.

Personally, I'll risk sheet metal damage occasionally but I believe it is unacceptable to roll a vehicle (wheels should point toward earth at all times the vehicle is in motion), and I will not risk physical injury to another person other than myself. Coward? Probably. Still alive? Yup. Coincidence? Not hardly.

Good luck.
