But the viscosity of oil is higher than air, much higher. Another consideration is that the ball bearing is on a 45 degree angle, like a pinion bearing. THat way it supports up/dwn AND loading along the axis of the shaft. Standard turbos have a brass thrust plate that is fine for stock boost but I'll bet it doesn't hold up to higher boost levels. OF course cheaper versions wouldn't make a difference in lag if they don't have the expensive thrust bearing. The other post said they only put a support ball bearing at one end. We can speculate all day but the proof of how much better the ball bearing units are is already out there. THe real debate is whether they're worth the extra money.
