Hey Eric,
I'm really glad to hear that you will soon put on a helmet and get out onto the racetrack! You are going to love it!
About the suspension issues, after I did my '86 SPG conversion to '88 axles and 16" Aeros, all I had to adjust was the alignment. There is a lot to be lost/gained here, so a reputable tuner that will work with you is key. The steering precision was never *quite* what it was with the 15" wheels and PZeros, but the overall handling, braking, and grip was tops. I doubt that your springs are much harder (if any) than the old G6 springs I have (and if they are, HOLY SH*T!!) and I'm still running a stock front bar in PU bushings with a big aftermarket rear bar w/ solid bolt-up mounts. I have experimented with stock F/R, stock rear only, etc and this is the best -- the car is completely solid and controllable in corners. There are several good suggestions from others here regarding troubleshooting.
My 5 speed is a mix of stock '86 and '88 parts. I rebuilt it 80k ago, and I think it still works -- it is on the garage floor right now, I'm using it as a toe-stubber. Soon I will crack it open to see how it looks inside. I bought a "big" pinion bearing from Swedish Dynamics just in case I want to do that while I'm in there. Avoid speed shifting, drop-clutching, wheelspin and jumps, and you should be fine with whatever you've got in there!
Keep us posted on the track events!
