I don't have much to add to his comments, except to say that stock boost on your car should be no more than 11 psi, unless by some odd chance they lowered boost for the 1987 year. :) That means, on your gauge, presuming it's pretty close to mine, stock boost won't get you into the red zone, not even to the division between yellow/red, which is 12 psi on my car.
As mentioned, timing is not changed by the ECU, that is purely mechanical at the distributor, and has nothing to do with knock, only boost.
You can check out my page for the upgrades I've done. These are what you can achieve with a totally bone stock engine and turbo. Taking the head off/engine apart, of course, affords you several other options to increase performance.
