Don't concern yourself with doing away with too much backpressure. The turbo itself creates a large amount of backpressure for the engine. I've heard it can be up to twice the boost pressure! And as side note it acts as a muffler, dampening 30% of engine noise. As I said before, the easiest way to gut the cat is to remove the cat and downpipe as one unit. By doing this you avoid having to remove the rusty bolts that attach the downpipe to the cat. Then jamb something like a steel rod in the cat to smash up the guts. Then use a coathanger to pull out the wire mesh. The euro saabs without cats were rated at 10 hp more than US catted models. A friend of mine told me this stuff as I wouldn't think of removing the cat from my car (environmental disclaimer)
