definitely do it right the first time. a stock head gasket with the block o-ringed would be plenty. stock pistons are fine as well. piston meltdown was due to fueling/heat issues not bad pistons. je would melt down under leanout as well. my head is a 2.0l that has been opened up. a lot of talk on this board about 2.1 and 2.3 heads, but no numbers. just it has a bigger number it must be better kind of thing. doesn't carry much clout. of course, once it's mentioned, everyone jumps on. same thing with the 85 cams. saab only used them for one year, i wonder which ones are better...:) if you have a good machine shop, they can do the headwork and cams together. set everything up right. i can get you hooked up with mine down here if you are at a stopping point. i bet vince knows some up there though.
if you are going to take the time and money to do a new engine and still pull power from it, don't dick around with band aids. get the ecu and be done. heavy duty pistons and coatings, and copper gaskets and all are nice, but unnecessary with the correct fuel and timing curves for given boost levels. same with h20 injection. spend the money where it matters. then your je pistons, etc will be insurance, not necessary. fact is, solid, safe, clean power can be had from a properly tuned ecu. the reason some people are having issues with these engines and longevity is due to improper fuel and timing. when you can adjust timing to give you more off the line until boost comes on and then have enough fuel so you don't need to overretard to prevent predet, you're going to pull more power; and safely. but that's just my humble opinion.
i meet with the wolf guy on monday. they are set to go, so i will more than likely begin the wiring process next week. i have to sit down and plan everything out. process order, etc. i need the car everyday so i can't have it down for a long time. good thing though, major issue will be electrical. and it's esay enough to run some wires to get things going and then make everything pretty later on. i'll keep you posted with my progress. chances are, once i get it in and running well, i have a couple sets of maps that will save others, who use the same system, expensive dyno time.
sorry to hear about the car. good thing though, it will be better once it's up and going. good luck.
