but they're kind of like a balance weight with a small mount of travel. IF it's perfectly balanced you know where you are. BUT if you stick a big weight on one side it bottoms out and you can't tell how heavy the weight is. Wide band meters are accurate in a wider band of a/f ratios. As Aaron says, knowing something is better than nothing. Especially considering the a/f gage is only $45
