There is no point to covering the intercooler. You really won't face a condition where the air too cold and hurts performance. However if the temperature is so low that you don't need an intercooler replacing it with a straight pipe or more direct connection to the throttle body would help. If you eliminate the intercooler, you eliminate some pressure drop, which means more boost and more power.
