I looked into several different custom race setups on not just saabs, but mostly other 4 cyl.. and also other turbo setups.. Now I believe it is all really what kind of driving you will be doing.. personally I like a extreme amount of torque in the cars i build.. (endangering my transmission) lol. But if i'm singing around 6k all the time thats not the best idea... but running through tight turns and high speeds, where mid-range torque is very desirable I kept High compression pistons in my car.. I added a 2.1L head that is ported and mirror finished, along with a 2.1L intake.. now I had my block o-ringed and a copper head gasket , also i decked the head .009" and the block .005" to make up for the thicker head gasket, also because of the higher cc. in the 2.1L head. Also a t3/t4 turbo, with a external wastegate (really helps with spool up timing and tapper in the top rpm range).. also i had my pistons ceramic coated to help block heat from them internally .. all on the bottom end is lightened and balanced,.. and the flywheel is balanced.. with an aluminum crank-pulley..Now the car has a real strong top end runing around 19psi at cut-off.. but the mid-range ( just randomly putting your foot into it when your cruising )is INCREDIABLE... tires come loose at 55 mph... no downshifting at 3k rpm or so.. so it has lots of "usable power" But like i said its what you want in a car.. its very smooth and controlable and predictable... but very very fast.. I had 1st-5th and the cluster gear, lay gear all worked on at a local metalurgy shop.. so far so good.. I also have made a girdle for the diff.. it surrounds the driver cups, around the bottom and around the back.. I use 32# injectors and it has a slightly high idle and in the winter is a little harder to start.. but it is sooo worth it.. I also have a custom intercooler that i got from out local Turbo Reman shop.. with all custom 2 1/2" pipes... exhaust is 2 1/2" .. i couldn't honestly tell any difference between the 2 1/2" and 3" once i had the ext. wastegate.. But the car drives beatifully.. it has taken me over 2 years to build this motor and tranny.. I have yet to get beat by another saab at our shop.. but that day will come . lol anyways, just thought i would share my thoughts on the torque issue .. horse is nice.. but torque is fun!
