Although the 2.1 and early 2.3 liter cylinder heads might fit onto the B202 engine assemblies, more universal results can be rendered from a smaller port size on the 2 liter applications. Valve sizing is identical on all 2 liter, 2.1 liter, and early 2.3 liter cylinder heads but the port sizes changed specifications dependent on engine designation, camshafts, etc. With the introduction of the 1994 Trionic 2.3 liter 9000/900, intake valve sizing was increased while still maintaining the same exhaust valve dimension as earlier models.
Our most popular and street progressive cylinder head for the 2 liter B202 engine assemblies retains use of the OEM intake manifold and keeps intake port sizing limited to valve size. This correlates to a more universal power production and improves low end, mid range, as well as top end performance.
For any performance of this type, it will be critical to keep valve port and intake plenum sizing optimal for air speed as well as volume. As we increase the size of the intake port/plenum, volumetric capacity may improve but the speed in which the induction is traveling will be reduced.
As an example, employment of the 2.1 liter cylinder head and intake manifold on the 2 liter turbocharged assemblies will almost always render a mild enhancement to top end performance but will typically see diminished low end to mid range performance. The velocity/speed of air flow is reduced through the larger induction ports/plenum and will require additional volumetric demands (engine rpm) to keep the air speed to volume ratios at an optimal. We offer the 2.1 liter cylinder head assemblies and/or larger valve sizing for top end oriented 2.0 liter performance applications.
As a one for one replacement, more universal advantages could be rendered through the use of the 1985 B202 cylinder heads (which have symetrical port sizing in a 2.0 liter format) or retain your B202 post 1987 cylinder head and improve it's potential. A properly updated 2.0 liter cylinder head can see improvement of nearly 30% air flow/volume at maximum valve lift over OEM while retaining optimal port/plenum sizing for sub 6000 engine rpm designation.
