OK there have been 2 developments here.
1 - I opened up the blasted tranny and found the bottom littered with gear teeth, not bearings as I was suspecting. The laygear and main gear for 3rd were both shredded clean. 1000 points each to Kevin K and Eric H for correct *online* diagnosis. Looks pretty cool if I do say so myself. I guess with 317,000+ miles and significantly more than stock power, the clock was ticking for those parts. Good news - this gearbox will be rebuildable with only a few replacement parts, most of which I have!
2 - The local Saab dismantler got in a 1993 900 5-speed the other day, and I went to take a look at it. I think it had 100k miles on it. We pulled the covers and found pristine interior - including a reverse gear with not even 1 chipped tooth. The ring and pinion had very little backlash, the spiders were OK, etc. The fluid was probably original, since there does not seem to be a drain plug (?!) and it was stinky. There are updates in the case, covers and gears that make it slightly more desireable than my current gearbox, so I bought it on the spot for $800. I plan to open it up, check the shift forks and syncros for wear (replace if necessary), flush it out, and put it back together in time for another track day at Thunderhill Raceway on the 15th!!! Yee haw!!
