that these are brand new cars, and aside from all the performance, you are also getting a brand new, reliable vehicle under warranty. This is a little different than an old SPG straining its tranny and head gasket hoping to keep up (I own one of the latter). Not to mention the fact that both cars pack an AWD system capable of taking a drag launch wallop, as well as transferring enough power to keep the car sideways through a turn with all four wheels spinning. The stock WRX does not pack that much power, but the EVO and STi sure as hell do. Basically they are an offering for people who value performance and tunability foremost, and are willing to compromise in other areas in order to afford a car that offers so much of it. What used car can you buy that can do the afformentioned, after tuning, for a similiar price, and still have the reliability of a new car? DSM? Terminal maintenance issues and drivetrain weakness. S4? Any in that price bracket will break a lot, plus thy're heavy and understeer biased. 3000GT/Stealth? Horrible build quality on the affordable ones, shoddy reliability, and substantial heft. The list goes on and on and on. I agree that the materials and workmanship do not rival older saabs, but to get that kind of quality + performance you have to spend a lot more money (Think brand new S4, M3, AMG C32). Don't get me wrong, I am not well off, and am sinking considerable sums of money into improving my SPG while I go to college and work a crappy job. I am all for "rolling your own" so to speak, but if I had the cash, I would be wasting Mustangs in a gleaming new EVO right now. Damn you insurance and requisite credit ratings. My 2 cents.
