I think that's to be expected. Other than the boost control the only thing the moded ecu will add is different timing and fuel maps. Since you were already running 14 psi, with your mbc, changing to the abbott ecu and running about the same boost is not going to show much (if any) performance differences. The timing and fuel just don't make that much difference, though since the abbott ecus run really rich it help might save your turbo at high rpms.. Taking off your mbc and setting the ecu to produce the same boost won't give you increased performance. The only way to get more performance is more boost.
Abbott uses a pretty hokey way to set your max boost level. They tighten the waste gate actuator so it opens at a higher pressure, this also raises the base boost and shortens the stroke length of the actuator, this stroke length controls how far the waste gate is opened. Raising the base boost will effect the ecu's ability to dump boost, to a safe level, as the last chance at knock control. On my car, with an abbott ecu, to get about 20 psi the stock actuator was wound up so tight there was barely any stroke length left. You can get actuators with a higher opening pressure, that way you don't have to wind them as tight for the same boost level. Though you're still stuck with a high base boost.
I guess, if someone asked my opinion, I'd take the mbc out and set the waste gate actuator to allow about 16-17 psi boost and go with that.
