You're thinking of extra downforce on the rear tires for rear drive traction, like nascar. Downforce also applies to front drive. The spoiler reduces lifting forces at higher speeds so the rear end doesn't get light. They don't need to be huge either. I remember one that only stuck out about 2 inches on the rear edge of the trunk that reduces lift forces by 30%. I'm surprised the saab catalog doesn't give numbers.
