Rotation Computation
Yes, rotating weight does have a big effect when it comes to racing, but your rotors may not be the factor you think they are.
Rotating weight, or mass, has always been a concern with racers. We’ve all heard that one pound of rotating weight is equal to several pounds of static weight on the car. To find out just how concerned we should be about rotating weight when it comes to brake rotors, we turned to Rex Stump, a chassis-engineering specialist with Hendrick Motorsports.
“For the most part, braking performance carries weight over everything else,” Stump says. “We often carry a little more brakes than we need to. When you get right down to it, the weight of the rotor isn’t really that critical, but not for the reason you might think.
“The effect of rotating mass is calculated on the radius of the spinning object cubed. In other words, imagine a ring weighing 10 pounds with a 6-inch radius. Now picture a ring that still weighs 10 pounds but has a radius of 12 inches. The bigger ring has twice the radius, so the extra rotating mass is two cubed—that’s eight times more in terms of mass that you are trying to spin up to speed.
“So yes, rotating mass is important, but what you have to remember is a brake disc is surrounded by a rim and tire. We’ve actually studied this: Even though a cast-iron rotor may be pretty heavy, because the tire has a far greater radius, it has something like 150 times greater rotating mass than the disc.”
Translation: Don’t lose sleep over an extra pound of rotor weight.
