I think other posters are correct in that you must divide up the driving conditions
to evaluate each system:
Dry pavement – at the instant acceleration begins, FWD has the advantage
because of more weight over the drive wheels assuming front engine/front drive.
But once weight is transferred to the rear axle due to acceleration, FWD traction
suffers and RWD traction benefits. AWD always has 100% of the weight over
the drive wheels, so it should take off the best.
Mud/snow/wet – Here you have the same physics but conditions don’t allow for
very hard acceleration; therefore not much weight transfer happens. In this case,
FWD maintains the traction advantage and RWD suffers. Again, AWD always
has 100% of the weight over the drive wheels, so it should take off the best.
A Porsche 911 (or VW bug or whatever) seems to have the ideal setup for launching -
with the engine weight over the driven wheels, plus more traction available when the
rearward weight shift happens. A mid-engine RWD car will be somewhere in-between
all these options.
