I have a '00 audi S4 with quattro. While it doesn't have the power or straight line acceleration of my recently departed (chipped) viggen, it doesn't have the turbo lag you mention. I think the twin turbo setup is the best turbo engine configuration for keeping boost in higher rpm's while avoiding lag of larger turbos. AWD is unbelievable when taking off while turning, etc. I floored it while turning onto the main road in the rain.. and couldn't get it to spin. The downside is weight. I could go faster on a cloverleaf with the viggen than the stock S4, due to 400lb extra weight of awd. My 2950lb spg feels like a go-cart compared to the approx 3600lb S4. I do agree that awd cars can be slower. AWD cars will lose at highway speeds if hp is similar..because the fwd has plenty of traction and the awd is paying the price of extra weight. If awd didn't have advantages why would saab spend all that money to make the pike's peak car AWD? I think the 9-2 is a great start for saab.
