Back in the heydays of Mazda's rally carreer they were cleaning Audi's clock. Small translates to light (not always, but ususally) which is a good thing. And snow is not the reason I buy AWD, in the old Mazda, nor our current Audi. Handling is the key benefit. With 227hp on tap, that Subbie ranks up there with the Viggen or my Talladega in the power department. Don't know it's torque yet. Performance parts are already becoming available on that thing, so that really isn't an arguement either.
I will grant you the OVERALL performance -- utility, handling, and speed/acceleration when taken as a whole, is pretty darn hard to beat with the Saab. Not to mention the charm. Been driving 'em twenty years. I don't expect I'll stop if I do get a Subbie. Just add it to the collection...
As Hurley Heywood (Porsche and Audi race car driver lf lore) once said, a 2WD will beat and A- or 4WD in a sprint, but with AWD you can go much deeper into the turns, hence faster laps, hence winning races...
