... I've been thinking an awful lot about this turbo, and if i should really buy it or back down at the last minute...
this IS a swedish dynamics turbo, T3/T4, and they supposedly are of bad design, according to my friend Dave Kennedy at Group 9 performance...
i understand that he is entitles to his own opinion, which might nor accurately represent the qualities of this turbo, HOWEVER he IS the person who built my engine for me, and perhaps i should listen to his opinion! ;)
ON THE OTHER HAND... back when i owned the Brande new T25 turbo, and was thinking of upgrading THAT turbo to a T25/T3 hybrid, almost EVERYONE talked me out of the idea, because it would be a lame upgrade for a turbo... and it wouldn't flow much more air than what i've got right now... so it's sort of a waste of time and money.
Originally my thoughts were along the lines of not wanting to change the exhaust manifold and cooling lines... but i agree that a tiny T25 turbine just doesn't cut it for what i want to do. I also originally thought that i would enjoy a faster spooling turbo for "around town badness", but Even ow i crave MORE boost, and on the highway too, and i'm willing to sacrifice some fast spool up ability for longer peak boost holding times....
so...
this is why i have succumbed to changing my exhaust manifold and cooling lines to support a t3 based unit, no matter what it is, and i know it's possible becuase others have donw it before, with little or no difficulty.
I already have a t3 exhaust manifold sitting in my garage, so all i'd need to do is have some lines fitted, and i can't imagine it being that hard.
ANYWAYS, so, wether this turbo in quesiton is THE turbo that i will use in the future, i understand that if i want to flow more i'll eventually NEED to get rid of the T25 style and upgrade to a T3 style.
So when I look at this turbo again in that light, it doesn't seem that bad.
It isn't damaged at all from the previous engine overheat, and it has very low miles on it. It's a VERY reasonable price, as far as turbos go...
...and Dave at group 9 will be able to re-clock it for me so that it will fit onto my 9000, as it was originally from a 900.
He'd also be interested in seeing the configuration of the turbo as well... even though he's not impressed by it.
I think worst case scenario is, he thinks it's crap and not worth using, but i think that it would be a PERFECT choice to upgrade in the future.
I think it would be a GREAT platform to start with, and i can have it rebuilt with the fastest spooling T3 turbine i can get on it, and a compressor wheel with the capacity to make the kind of HP i want.
So, for $400, i think that works for me.
I paid $250 for the New T25 turbo, and that's exactly what i sold it for... so no losses there... i was going to have the new T25 turbo rebuilt for performance ANYWAYS, so it's all justifiable to me.
I guess i'm comftorable with purchasing this turbo enough so that i don't NEED any confirmation from anyone on the board here... but it'd be nice to hear what you all think.
Dave happens to know eric too... which is a plus, he'll call eric and ask for the specs on the turbo... and tomorrow i'm going to call Swedish dyunamics and talk to Gary about the turbo as well, ans get HIS opinion on it.
