Inga,
Hope all's well!
The 1985 900T could see substantial benefit by enhancing cylinder head flow properties as we find the 1985 cylinder head castings to be fairly restrictive. These same castings also have the most benefit with respect to porting and, as an end result, could flow more than a ported 2.1 liter cylinder head or 1987-1993 900 turbo cylinder head. More material in these earlier castings means that more material that could be eliminated if going for a maximum flow benefit. The 2.1 liter cylinder head from the 1991-1993 NA would provide some benefit over the 1985 factory cylinder head if attempting to keep things simple (non modified cylinder head) but our results show a 600 rmp lag (power loss) at 2700-3300 engine rpm when installing the 2.1 liter intake manifold onto the 2.0 liter engine assembly. The intake plenums are ideally matched for their particular engine application (intake manifold sizing is tylically 50-60% of displacement)and the theory behind the correct plenum size is relative to a reversion of intake flow upon inatake valve closures. A properly sized intake manifold plenum will allow this reversion to be accurately timed so that it meets the begining of the plenum by the time the intake valve reopens. While changing to a larger plenum size may allow for better maximum volumetric properties, the intake/plenum timing will be slightly shifted. If looking for optimal low end to mid range engine performance, we would recommend a ported 2.0 liter intake manifold and if seeking a mid to upper engine rpm benefit, the 2.1 liter intake manifold may be more beneficial.
Compressor wheel selection should be based on horsepower targets. Once you decide on your realistic engine horsepower goals, the proper compressor wheel may be selected to maximize efficiency relative to charge temperatures and the right compressor wheel would provide the optimal charge density (lowest temperature).
Best of luck and regards,
Gary at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC
