Pete:

1 I have had the car for only the last 1000 miles. I have papers showing it had a rebuilt tranny put in at like 130,000 miles. It now has 135,000.
The rest of the history is unavailable.
The timing chain does not rattle. My friend, the weekend mechanic, said the chain and sprockets looked in really good condition. When I showed the tensioner to a local Saab mechanic he seemed dismissive of the 11 mm gaps importance, as well. Due to my obsessing about it,I ended up buying a motorcycle chain breaker/riviter tool which seemed like the right tool for the job, but, at this point I dont plan to do the chain. If it starts to rattle, I can take care of it without pulling the head.

2 When we were taking the head off, we were able to untorque the head bolts with one hand on a breaker bar. My friend said, "uh, this is really easy". Apparently they weren't torqued down all the way. When we pulled it up, I was expecting something dramatic, but at first I couldnt see anything wrong. After we cleaned it we found that the gasket had a few corroded areas, but the head was flat when a straight edge was put on it. The only other sign of something being off, was that the impression of the gasket around the cylinders edges wasnt a complete circle. If I had known beforehand, I might have been able to just tighten the headbolts. (silent groan)

3 The valve job includes the seat regrinding and some clean up on the valve edges. It was $130. I may have made a mistake, but these guys were recommended and I tend to trust people to know their jobs. Im usually right a bit over half the time. : )

4 Thanks for this info, it makes me feel like I'm right to not do the chain at this time

Thanks for taking the time to reply,

BB
