I recently graduated with a Political Science degree from UNC, and I am sort-of using it, as I am a Paralegal for a major law firm in Washington, DC. That said, I also love tuning cars. I have had great success trying out new things, and new cars. I am on my third Saab in less than 1.5 years, and my second SPG at that. My brother and another Saab master technician / friend run their own indie-Saab shop, which is close enough to where I live that it is wise to go but only if I am going to spend the whole day (it's about an hour from where I live) They just opened up last summer after having worked for evil Saab dealerships for many years. The business is doing great now, which is awesome for them!
I have had a great time recently buying and selling Saabs. I restore them, fixing all of their little problems (and big ones!) and then sell 'em. It is how I am going to pay for.... LAW SCHOOL!
Sometimes, work is great, and I have no thoughts of leaving. The firm will not be paying for my law school (which is a huge advantage for you), so I am on my own there. Sometimes, work sucks and I am ready to say f*** it and off I go to be my brother's apprentice and to go to Saab technician's school. I have wanted to go to law school for sometime now, and that is still the plan. I am also getting married this year. Someday, I would love to work 3 or 4 days per week, and spend the remaining days restoring Saabs. I have been lucky enough to make good money doing what I am doing both in work and restoring cars. Honestly, restoring cars gives me more satisfaction than my regular job! My brother and his business partner are teaching me incredible amounts of things about Saabs and cars in general. My favorite joke is that I now know how to put a transmission back together, but it definitely wouldn't work!
To finish, I need my regular job to pay the bills. Working on cars is very rewarding if you are passionate about it. My brother, his partner and I are passionate about Saabs, so working on them is fun, even if it means doing the same thing again and again. I will still go to law school, and get that JD. If I decide later on that I only want to work on cars, then I can go do that. I suggest trying out being a mechanic for a while. Sounds like your employer likes you enough that they would understand if you left and wanted to come back. That is for you to gauge. My brother loves what he is doing, and I love going up to his shop to work on cars. It all matters what your passion is.
Good luck.
Mike
