I'm 25, just got married, and am a computer science dropout
from a serious engineering school - I learned all I needed
and started my own business. I'm into the internet business
real deep and enjoy going to work everyday (self employed).
Before that computers and photography were my hobbies. Cars
can be added now.
I now don't play any games on the computer like my peers. I haven't
played doom/quake/whatever since college 6 years ago. I play mahjong
or a card game on the computer once in a while. I'm not into
computer performace on my home computer like my friends. I am
taking hand me down computers from work home, while other employees
are building 1+gigahertz screamers for fun. I'm more interested in
reliability than speed, since computer problems are more of a
pain than a challenge. I avoid flashy intuitive computers infavor
of more reliable complex systems. It's not a challenge because I've got
them figured out so well. I still love my job though and wouldn't
want to get out of it.
My father in law is a mechanic - a car version of my computer story.
More interested in reliability than performance, uses hand-me-down
cars and sells them for more than he bought them for. Doesn't do
"fun" car stuff. Hates European cars. If I were a mechanic instead of a computer person, I'd be afraid of ending up down that path.
Yes it is possible to avoid that path, but not usually profitable.
Some mechanics get paid better than others. My father-in-law doesn't
make as much as his experience says he should as he works for someone
else and has a steady schedule, vacations, etc... My Jaguar mechanic
is self employed, works out of his own garage beside his house, gets
$60/hour and keeps most of it I bet. (he has a few big toys)
However, he still enjoys cars and talking about cars.
I'd say get a part time automotive job and see if it affects your
hobby and be prepared to get out and try something else if you want.
The experience could be invaluable in helping your hobby.
Or still enjoy your cars and job and have yet another hobby to keep
yourself obsessed in. Flying, photography, firearms, whatever....
