Ok, I am not absolutely sure about this, but the local mechanic and I pulled the pan off a 2.3 that was out of a 9000, and we sure didn't see how you could get to the balance chain. Maybe a NG or a 9-3?
So, if you are going in thru the front cover, remove the tensioner and pull the guts out of it just to be sure. Then make yourself a block off plate out of something you might just have laying around, like a Fosters can, using the tensioner body as a template. Then remount the tensioner with the aluminum under it.
I did leave the shafts in place, only I blocked off the oil supply. And I don't think removing the teeth is really neccessary.
If there is a way to check the CPS, have your mech check it, but they are really expensive to replace.
