Removing clutch and slave cylinder from Classic 900
Posted by John Kupiec (more from John Kupiec) on Mon, 4 Dec 2000 15:45:27
Folks, I'm trying to do a clutch job on a 1985 900 turbo, and following the Bentley procedure as closely as I can. I have hit a major snag. Bentley says that when all the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel have been removed, 'Remove the clutch, pressure plate and slave cylinder as a unit.'
Well, I've been trying to do just that for about 5 hours, using various means of persuasion, including PBlaster, screwdrivers, pry bars and ballpeen hammer. It seems that there is simply not enough clearance to remove everything. I have the pressure plate off a couple of the flywheel pegs, but I can't move it any further. It' seems that the fingers of the pressure plate are still pressing hard enough to take up all the slack. I can't pry out the slave cylinder, and I can't move the pressure plate.
FWIW, I've tried the Bentley trick of substituting wire (14 gauge household wire) in place of the SAAB special spring tool that holds back the pressure plate fingers. But the wire keeps loosening and falling out, so the clutch fingers are still exerting pressure.
Is there any trick to removing the clutch and pressure plate unit? Bentley says nothing on this.
Do I need to get the SAAB tool? If so, where?
Any and all suggestions are welcome.
