John,

It sounds like you haven't got the clutch pressure plate compressed far enough.

Are your clutch hydraulics working? If they aren't, you won't be able to get
the clutch compressed far enough to completely insert the SAAB tool far enough
under the 'finger' springs to release the plate enough to get clearance. See
if you can borrow the SAAB lever tool (8393175) from a SAAB shop to compress
the plate enough. You have to get the ring mounted in as far as you can or it
won't work.

There is also an early style SAAB ring tool which is too narrow to work. The
best solution is to make sure that you have the later style SAAB tool (SAAB p/n
8790826, although this may be superseded). 14 gauge wire is too small. If you
are going to use the wire trick, try using an old piece of ignition wire. But
the spacer will work best IF you get it mounted ALL THE WAY under the finger
springs.

I would suggest that as long as you are going to all the hassle you should
replace both the clutch slave cylinder AND the shaft pilot bearing in the
flywheel so you don't have to do the job again soon. I assume that you already
are replacing the clutch disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing which should
all come as a kit. Finally, although many mechanics don't do so, I always use
medium strength (blue) Locktite on the clutch bolts. Be sure to tighten the
clutch bolts in stages (use a torque wrench) and in a pattern (like wheel lug
nuts, opposite bolts across from each other) to make sure that you get the
clutch plate mounted flush to the flywheel. Don't forget to remove your spacer
ring and to bleed the clutch hydraulics (use a coolant pressure tester to
pressurize the system for bleeding-- you'll be at it all day if you try to
bleed by pumping the clutch pedal.)

Hope this helps.

Dave
