2nd gear grinding and tranny dipstick (or lack thereof)
Posted by Travis Hussey (more from Travis Hussey) on Mon, 2 Apr 2001 17:19:16
Speaking of transmissions, my fiancee's got an '86 900 Turbo,
manual trans, but it doesn't have a dipstick! I located a large
metal plug on the right side of the trans, way down on the
engine, and am wondering why the plug is there instead of a
dipstick... She bought it used last year, and we were lucky
enough to get a detailed account of repair and maintenance work,
but I don't have a date of when the trans. fluid was changed
last. I'd like to change it soon, but don't know how full to
fill it. I have a Haynes manual, but neither that or the owners
manual say anything other than 'check the dipstick'. Any ideas??

Regarding 2nd gear grinding, the car has the same problem as
yours when it's cold; a 2-second ride on the clutch is necessary
for a smooth shift! The problem goes away once the engine (and
transmission) warm up. Hopefully changing to a better fluid will
fix that.
