Your fiancee's car has had a tranny swap and it was swapped to a later model.
The '86 did have a traitional tranny dipstick (and my '86 does) but the
later ones have this PITA screw in dipstick. That big metal plug on the
passenger side of the tranny IS the dipstick, but you've got to get a socket
on it to check it. Screw the thing out and give her a look!

And please, if shifting fast means 'GRIND' and shifting slow means a nice
smooth shift into 2nd... STOP SHIFTING FAST! The car is trying to tell you
something. These are Saab transmissions, not known for quick shifting
traits. If you are grinding going into second you've worn out your 2nd gear
synchro from all that quick shifting.

Yes, switching to Redline MTL can help the shifting because the Redline MTL
is 'different' from whatever you've got in there now. That is all I should
say because the minute someone mentions Redline MTL helped their transmission
someone else wants to know how and why and where can I get some of that
magical stuff and then someone else comes out of the woodwork and says wait a
minute my transmission went kablooey 3 months after I switched to Redline so
don't do it and bla bla bla bla bla. Can you tell I've heard this before?

The 9000 tranny and the 900 tranny are completely different animals, but
you're both exibiting the same problem. 2nd gear synchro can't kep up with
what you want it to do for whatever reason. Now the 900 tranny's main weak
point is the pinion bearing so I choose gear oil specifically to help that
weak point. The 9000 doesn't have a specific weak point that I know of so
just use the best synthetic that fits the application.

IMHO, Redline is good for shifting, but not so good for the transmission
life. That's just my OPINION! I can live with slower shifting by adjusting
my technique. So I run Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil in my car. The shifting
is not much better than when I ran GL-5 and is worse when the car is cold but
I KNOW this stuff is helping save my pinion bearing.

Try something for me will ya? Shift with LESS force next time. Make it a
two-finger type of shift. You may find to your surprise (I certainly was
surprised when I tried it on the suggestion of an old saab dealer/racer) that
with LESS force, the shift gets done quicker than it was with a lot of force
applied. This helps the synchro's life and reduces the likelyhood of
grinding. If it isn't going to go in, it won't go in... until it is ready,
INSTEAD of grinding and taking metal off that oft abused 2nd gear.

Always concentrate on bettering yor driving instead of asking the car to make
up for your flaws, however small theymight be. ;)
