To David Whiteside of Abbott America,

I think $60/hour is totally reasonable. Maybe people are comparing
that rate to the rates they earn their money. There is a rule of thumb
that a business must charge 3 times the worker's wage in order to make
money from his labor. At $60/hour, this leaves $20/hour for the
mechanic. That is certainly not a rich man's wage.

The costs that annoy me are (1) the parts that seem overpriced and (2)
the things that are not designed to be fixed at a reasonable cost. For
instance, the ventilation fan on the 9000 might be the most buried
thing in the car and requires many hours of labor to replace. That
really burns me up, because the fan is sure to burn out before the car
dies.

Everything you say is totally reasonable. I have no argument with
anything you said. I just wish the cars were designed with repair in
mind more. I don't know enough about cars to know if that's possible,
given the extremely complex demands we place on them lately, which has
led the designs to be complex. I do see that cars are more powerful,
comfortable, safe, reliable, durable, and fuel efficient than before.
That's a lot.

Maybe I should ditch the car and move back to NYC, where you don't need
-- or even want -- a car. I'm half joking. I've been considering it.

Tom
