Buying a SAAB is a function of (1) a test drive experience that grabs you emotionally and (2) a calculation of the relative value of the SAAB compared to say an A-4, MB C class, BMW 3 series and maybe an S 60R. The fact that you are looking at a SAAB tells me you are likey not looking at Acuras (too bland) or anything other than a IS-300 (drove my mother-in-laws and hated its feel and handling although it does look good in black).
You are looking for a sophisticated but understated ride with classic looks and handling. You also prize safety and utility (not as much as there used to be unfortunately) and you likely are independent minded or else you would already have a leased BMW.

SAAB is usually the winner in a side by side overall value comparative analysis, so the only question left is the acceleration or lack of it a turn off? If you thought the 9-3 rode as well or better than anything else you test drove, then buy it and never look back.

I knew almost instantly that I would buy my 99 9-3 the first time I mashed the throttle and the low end torque made that car jump. However, I understand the newer 9-3s have lost some of this "mule kick in pants", and my test drive a year ago confirmed this. I do think the cars look good though I would never give up my hatchback for a trunk.

There is a good chance that the 9-3 will likely be a bullet proof as the 9-5 out of the gate (own a 99 9-5 SE and it had just one problem (a power window off the track) period in 4 years) To increase the odds of this, wait to get an 04 which should incorporate fixes to common year one problems.
