The regulation requires all cars' bumpers to take a certain amount of impact (5-8mph I think)without causing any damage the bumper. This explains why the Merc had very little damage.
I can imagine your front fender got pushed in and subsequently the front wheel. If you give a good kick on the front fender of any car (including Merc and Saabs), not that I have done it before, but you can make a very sizable dent on it and this tells you how weak front fenders are, and they are the only piece of metal that protects the front wheels from any impact. Unlike bumpers where there's fiber glass cover, steel beam and shock absorbing material underneath.
