I've followed a few discussions recently here and as far as fuel economy and coasting, that remains an interesting question in my mind.
One thing I was not aware of is the fuel mapping that shuts off the injectors
when coasting at a certain RPM - higher than idle - so although the engine slightly slows the car, fuel consumption lower than idle?
As far as lugging the engine, consider this: Car mfgs have an interest in posting higher MPG's and thus selling (more) larger cars. Would that interest outweigh their concern for longterm health and wear of an engine?
I now only use 5th at +40mph ignoring the upshift recommendation at 35mph and my mileage hasn't suffered.
