Saab USA used to publish Saab Soundings years ago (does it still do it?). In 1983 (boy, this post's author must be ancient!), a Saab engineer recommended the 1-3-5 shifting method to save gas. It said to be patient and described how to lug an engine in order to get 10% more gas mileage.
In my 9-3SS owner's manual, it says not to use full throttle (when you lug the engine, you use full throttle) during the first (?) 3,000 mi.
I shift early, but I try not to lug the engine. I sometimes go from 2 to 4 or 3 to 5 if I accelerate too fast. I found that 41 mph is the nicest point to shift to 5th. It doesn't lug but it seems to save gas.
