Ditto the the other posts - mine is a 2006 2.0T, identical in every way except the transmission ('06 using the 5 speed dating back to the mid '80s) and the instrument panel, and has been absolutely reliable. The check engine light did come on once, but it went out by itself before I got around to having the code pulled. Anyway, to answer your other questions:
BMW and VW were still on their previous model cycle, and the only VW CV available then was the Beetle. I actually liked the way the car drove, but the seating and pedal positions make my right leg hurt. Ditto the Mini I tried, as well as a BMW. What is it with Germans, are their right legs shorter than their left ones? When I'm close enough to work the clutch, my right leg is not supported by the chair. When I'm far enough back so my right leg is comfortable, I'm too far away from the clutch pedal. Back to the VW - the dealer was unable to close and latch the manual roof, and the electric roof requires moving up to the "deluxe" model just to have the priviledge of paying extra for it.
The BMW 325 CV I tested had the same annoying seating position. It had even less rear seat room than the Saab does, and was (by comparison to the 2.0T Saab) pretty slow. And cost a lot more. I didn't look at the Volvo.
Now today, there's the VW EOS(?) hard top CV, and a new generation BMW 3 series CV. Either of those might be better, they didn't exist when I was buying and I haven't driven either.
A question for you - why a 2.0T with premium package? If you look at the price differential between a base 2.0T and an Aero, it's a pretty big step, but add the cost of the premium package and the value of the Aero Academy driving school, and the price gap is pretty narrow. Then correct again for the 17" wheel and tire package and any other Aero Specific features, and you are looking a very small price difference. (as you may have guessed, my 2.0T is without the Premium Package)
