I did not go and see the car prior to purchase. I reviewed both Autocheck and Carfax and no issues showed up. The dealer provided 50+ high quality photos of every part of the car, including many close ups.
When I finally received the vehicle (about a week after wiring the funds) I was very impressed. The car was essentially flawless both externally and mechanically (I had a mechanic friend of mine give it a once over -- he said everything was perfect).
I was very nervous doing this as I would have preffered to do a test drive and inspect the vehicle up close personally. I dealt with a large Honda dealer that took this car as a trade in. Had I gone to see it, I would have bought it within a few minutes. I felt comfortable dealing with a large well known dealer. I have to say that my overall experience was a positive one.
