The issue of front springs breaking has been elevated from a complaint to an engineering investigation, number EA08026. GM claimed some 1200 incidences of warranty replacement of broken springs, and it's OK anyway b/c the cars were still controllable so it's not a safety defect. Further, the study is being limited to "salt belt" cars.
Anyone in the "sun belt" who has experienced a failure might want to chime in on this at NHTSA's web site - also anyone who suffered a crash due to the loss of control resulting from the failure.
I have visually inspected a broken spring and found it was pretty clearly a fatigue failure, but it didn't look to me like there was corrosion at the initialtion site. Seems to me that at this stage of human development we shouldn't have springs breaking. I wonder where they're made.
