Water pump tool adapter (for Saabtechs) Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Thu, 13 May 2010 17:57:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have been tinkering with trying to come up with something so that the Saab genuine water pump tool can actually be used for replacing the waterpump without having to remove the timing cover to reset the balance chain tensioner.
To me that seems to be an awful lot of extra work and cost of gasket (if damaged) just to correct something that the Saab tool should have avoided if it had been built better.
Since the genuine water pump comes with a toothed sprocket installed, I used that one teeth and all and placed it in a steel lathe and shaved off about 3 mm so that I'm left with about 2.7 mm thick disc.
When the thickness was correct, I cut into the remainder of the sprocket high enough so that the center portion fell off the tooth part and I was left with a disc with holes spaced properly.
Now I just needed to enlarge the holes to mimic the ones of the original tool and is left with a spacer thick enough to where it fills the gap and holds the water pump sprocket more secure and does not allow the sprocket to tilt sideways allowing the balance chain tensioner to skip a tooth.
I also had to remove the C-clips of the three screws in original tool and use three o-rings instead to the screws in place.
So far I have tried it on a dummy engine here on the floor and will see how it works on a real job later on.
