As with John having success 3 out of 4 pumps, I think it all depends on where the tensioner is as far as just have jumped a tooth or is just about ready to jump a tooth in its tensioner scheme.
The tool is just to sloppy with how it is built no matter how careful your are bolting everything up, when you pull the pump out, the sprocket is allowed to tilt slightly and if the tensioner is on the brink of moving to the next step of tension, it will do so.
Yeah, loose washers are out of the question due to the wrangling getting the tool in there and I will put a couple of spot welds on this spacer and tack it to the tool when I know it is correct.
What it does is that it pretty much holds the sprocket as tight as the water pump does and doesn't allow the sprocket to move at all.
Since I have 9 years behind me as a machinist and lathe operator and have access to one, it is no big deal for me to manufacture a thing like this.
The only thing was that the steel used in sprocket is superior strength due to the application so it was a little bit tough to machine and drill. Regular sheet metal would be easier.
Maybe you remember the B-engine and how it had that metal arm preinstalled to bolt the camshaft sprocket to when taking the head off. That worked very well in its simplicity without letting the tensioner out.
