Your reply prompted me to check my owner's manual. Transmission description on p. 302(tech data) describes 6-speed auto as electronically controlled w / planetary gears and lock-up function for torque converter in gears 1 - 6. No hill retarder described.
On p.177 (starting & driving -- transmission), the manual covers descending hills in a separate paragraph. Says if speed of car increases and despite accelerator being released, control module will change down; goes on to state: "If you desire more powerful engine braking, manually select a lower gear." This is not a hill retarder function as I understand such a device.
I can't say I've noticed an auto downshift on steep hills, but I usually use manual to control descents on steep grades in hilly or mountainous terrain -- an auto downshift from 6 to 5 under such circumstances is usually insufficient to substantially reduce car speed.
I am no professional, but am guessing that if you have a problem, it is in the control (ECU?)or possibly the valve body as someone suggested.
The Saab 6-speed auto is, I think, the one developed jointly by GM and Ford, and produced by Aisin in Japan. In my opinion, it is not as precise as the BMW unit, for example. I was hoping for a more sophisticated unit in later models. On the other hand, transmission controls are linked to emissions controls to prevent rapid closing of throttles and thus unburned gases exhausted, so maybe none of us will get the kind of auto trans we want, short of DSG becoming available for Saab.
Good luck with your problem; I will be interested in the outcome.
