So this is an advice based on not seeing the car but what you have disclosed in pieces here and there.
Don't spend too much time on this engine but prepare to rip it out and find a good used one instead.
Because if you are looking at removing the head to check it out and then removing the transmission to replace the rear main and then STILL not knowing the overall health of the engine bolting stuff back together.
You would make more money with your spare time watching the grass grow after you have installed a good used engine.
